Not all hand sanitizers make the grade

How to choose the right one, with Linden Leaves

It felt almost like overnight that hand sanitiser became an everyday staple, with many new options from a variety of brands flooding the market. As Linden Leaves always knew, not all hand sanitisers are made equal so the homegrown brand created their own expertly formulated version, that can be used on surfaces too. We've called upon the experts themselves to give us the rundown on the important considerations required for choosing the most effective hand sanitiser.

1. ALCOHOL CONTENT
Scientific studies have shown that hand sanitisers with more than 70% alcohol content are most effective at killing 99.9% of germs including bacteria and most viruses. This is what you want to use when you’re heading out into the world in Level 2. The Linden Leaves Hand Sanister contains 75% alcohol that is a non-sticky spray.

2. INGREDIENTS
Sadly, some hand sanitisers you find on the shelf have some pretty nasty ingredients (even banned ones) so make sure you read through the ingredients before you buy. In particular look out for carbomer and triethanolamine which can cause allergic reactions and toxicity with extended use. Triethanolamine is banned in Europe for use in cosmetics products.

3. WHERE IS IT MADE?
A large chunk of hand sanitisers in the New Zealand market are made overseas. Think about buying hand sanitiser Made in New Zealand – aside from the obvious of supporting local to keep NZ working, buying something made in New Zealand you know you can trust what it says on the label and you know that the manufacturers and employees are paid a minimum wage and adhere to all New Zealand worksafe practices.

4. PACKAGING
Anyone notice that it's pretty tricky making environmental and health conscious choices at the same time right now? One thing you can do is look for refillable/reusable hand sanitisers with a screw lid that you can refill from a larger container. Linden Leaves offer a Hand Sanitiser refill bottle so you can refill your handbag-friendly spray bottle to reuse. Every little bit helps.

5. EFFECT ON YOUR SKIN
Unfortunately, a high alcohol formula is going to strip your skin of its natural oils. There is no avoiding it. So, look for a hand sanitiser with caring natural ingredients, so you are protecting and caring for your hands at the same time. Linden Leaves added Pohutukawa and Kawakawa extracts. These New Zealand natives have natural antibacterial and protective qualities and mean it’s just that little bit less drying on the skin. You can also help things by applying a good quality hand cream. Try the Linden Leaves Memories Hand Cream with rose which can help relieve stress and anxiety or the calming Absolute Dreams Hand Cream with lavender. They're available in both a larger size to keep at home or on your desk and a smaller size that's great for on-the-go.
